You'd think that Shrek the Musical is a joke wouldn't you? And let's be honest, if you just heard about it now for the first time, you laughed a little. Well, we're here to tell you that while, yes, it is a joke and doesn't take itself seriously, and it's that very fact that allows this musical to succeed where other movie adaptations have failed. This project knows exactly what it is and revels in it - proudly waving its "Freak Flag" for all to see. You can tell they're in on the jokes and it's funnier for it!

We'll start by taking a look at the fabulous Original Broadway Cast who feature in this filmed production. Brian D'Arcy James (Something Rotten, 13 Reasons Why) plays Shrek on stage and you couldn't ask for a better embodiment of the beloved character. It is his excellent acting, paired with beautiful, surprisingly nuanced songs and a wonderful book that provides so much more depth to what was once just an Ogre in the films. I suppose that's the message of the show. There's more than meets the eye.

The rest of the cast are also excellent, including Daniel Breaker as Donkey and Sutton Foster as Fiona. They all are superb representations of their cartoon counterparts, but the praise really needs to go to Christopher Sieber as he played, no, WAS Lord Farquaad on stage. And due to a decision made by him in the workshop process, performed the whole show on his knees in a magic trick of a costume. It must be seen to be believed - an extremely well deserved Tony Award nomination for him that year.

The effects, lighting, set and costume design teams all help to ensure the audience is transported to the fairytale world where the show is set, with fluid scenic transitions that make sure you are never taken out of the story, not even for a second. Shrek's makeup looks like something from a movie set, let alone on a Broadway stage - it's incredible!

We completely recommend this musical, to everyone, ages 1 to 100! So when you get the opportunity, treat yourself to some popcorn, prepare yourself and your whole family for a laugh and enjoy Shrek The Musical on Netflix.
