Review: POTTED PANTO, Wilton’s Music Hall - 2024
Get ready to laugh, cheer, and shout “He’s behind you!” as Potted Panto delivers seven classic (kind of) pantomimes in just 80 minutes. The result? Pure, chaotic fun that somehow manages to capture the heart of pantomime traditions while turning them on their head.
Daniel Clarkson and Jeff Turner, the dynamic duo behind the beloved Potted series, bring their well-honed chemistry and razor-sharp wit to this holiday treat. Their years of working together shine through in the seamless banter and impeccable comedic timing that anchor the show. Dan takes on the role of the show’s glue, constantly pulling the focus back to the task at hand and forging through each of the pantomimes. He brings an air of determination to the chaos, contrasting wonderfully with his partner in crime. His delivery keeps the show structured amidst the inevitable mayhem, ensuring the audience can follow the whirlwind journey through panto classics. Jeff, on the other hand, is the quintessential prankster, delighting in throwing a spanner in the works at every opportunity. His insistence on doing his own selection of pantos creates delightful chaos, and his knack for traditional panto humour is second to none. Whether through his innocent delivery of double entendres or his exaggerated reactions to audience interaction, Jeff’s performance feels delightfully spontaneous, making the show feel more like a comedic improvisation than a meticulously rehearsed production. Together, Dan and Jeff create a perfect combination. Their comedic interplay, honed over years of collaboration, is electric, and their ability to bounce off one another keeps the energy high and has the audience in stitches from start to finish.
The clever writing blends panto staples like “Oh no it isn’t!” with fresh twists, ensuring laughs for audiences of all ages. The inclusion of topical humour adds an extra layer of enjoyment, giving the show a timely and fresh edge and making the performance feel relevant and dynamic.
The unsung hero of the production, however, has to be costume designer Nicky Bunch. With an incredible array of outfits that help you keep track of each story and character, the costumes are just as much a part of the storytelling as the performers themselves. Designed for lightning-fast changes, these costumes balance being over-the-top enough to capture the spirit of panto while remaining practical for the frenetic pace of the show. Backstage must look like an explosion of bright, extravagant outfits! Standout designs include a delightfully quirky beanstalk and a hilariously unexpected moose—but you’ll have to see the show to understand why.
The intimate venue perfectly suits the show’s high-energy vibe. The audience is close enough to feel fully involved, creating a lively and interactive atmosphere. However, as with any good pantomime, audience participation is a given—so steer clear of the front rows unless you’re ready to join the fun (though, truthfully, no seat is completely safe from a bit of cheeky involvement!).
Whether you’re a seasoned panto enthusiast or experiencing this tradition for the first time, Potted Panto is a whirlwind of laughter and festive nostalgia. With its compact runtime, lightning-fast costume changes, and rapid-fire hilarity, it’s a wonderful holiday outing for families, friends, and anyone in need of some Christmas cheer.
Panto madness packed with laughs and festive fun!
