Review: Northern Souvenirs – Niagara Falling
It’s always so nice to see theatre performers exploring other genres that compliment their craft. This is what Lisa MacGregor and Alex Varey have done in forming their Country-Pop duo, Northern Souvenirs.
Country music is massive in the US but in the UK, it has often trailed behind. However, with dedicated radio stations and live music venues, the popularity of the annual C2C Festival and country music platforms on the increase, the genre is booming more than ever right now.
Northern Souvenirs pride themselves on their “vivid storytelling” and “soaring harmonies”; something that their training would have massively helped with and something I can vouch for having listened to their latest single, ‘Niagara Falling’, which is the second release from their upcoming debut EP, Next Stop.
The duo has collaborated with producer North T Sangkum again for their new release, along with superb team of live and session musicians. From the intro featuring rhythm and lead guitar by Chris Hampson, the summer vibes are set; I just need a cold beer in hand!
MacGregor and Varey’s song is catchy with a gorgeous melody and stunning vocals. It would not seem out of place amongst the other artists on Country Hits Radio – my personal radio station of choice!
‘Niagara Falling’ has been well produced but as Varey’s vocals can be the more dominant of the two at times, the blend could be tweaked slightly to ensure it is better balanced. I am more partial to a female vocalist when it comes to the country genre but it must be said, my opinion on this does not impact my enjoyment of the song in the slightest. I will be singing “I’m Niagara Falling for you” for a long time to come!
‘Niagara Falling’ will be released on 17 July 2020 with their album to follow later in the year. I can’t wait to hear more material from this promising duo.
