Winchester’s Theatre Royal is once again spreading joy with its annual pantomime, this year featuring the classic tale of Mother Goose. While this may be an unconventional choice for a panto, the production delivers a delightful blend of traditional charm and modern flair.

A mere 103 years ago, the magic of Mother Goose was born on the stage of London's Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Playwright J. Hickory Wood crafted this timeless pantomime, specifically for the legendary comedian Dan Leno, creating the largest Dame role ever seen and a story that continues to enchant audiences to this day.

The talented cast brings the story to life with vibrant performances. Julian Eardley shines as the titular Mother Goose, captivating the audience with their comedic timing and warm stage presence. Liam Watson’s energetic portrayal of Jack Goose provides plenty of laughs, while the supporting cast, including Libby Gore, Brontë Alice-Tadman and Andrew Wheaton, deliver strong performances.

The integration of actor-musicians is a particularly inspired choice, elevating the production to new heights. Their live performances not only enhance the storytelling but also create a captivating atmosphere, drawing the audience deeper into the world of the play. The seamless blend of music and drama is a testament to the skill and creativity of the cast.

The show’s original songs, composed by Simon Slater, add a fresh and contemporary touch to the classic tale. While they may not be as instantly recognisable as traditional panto tunes, they provide a catchy soundtrack to the production.

The production design is visually impressive, with colourful costumes and imaginative set pieces. While the special effects may not be groundbreaking, they seem to do the job! It was a shame to see the theatre half empty for this year's pantomime. While the production itself offers moments of charm and humour, it seems that a more recognisable title or a more traditional approach might have drawn a larger audience. Perhaps next year, a classic pantomime with familiar characters and a well-loved storyline will bring back the crowds and fill the theatre once more.

Mother Goose is a fun-filled family entertainment that offers plenty of laughs and a good night out to beat those winter blues! A great alternative choice for a local traditional pantomime.
