Hightide Productions' More…Ghost Stories by Candlelight, featuring works by Tassa Deparis, James McDermott, Eloise Pennycott, and Aisha Zia, presents a unique concept for Halloween with its varied ghost tales.

Directed by Emily Ling Williams, the individual stories shine, showcasing the talents of Becky Barry and Sharan Phull, who skilfully bring each narrative to life. However, the overall experience lacks a cohesive through line. While the storytelling is engaging, the rationale behind the tales is unclear, leaving the audience disconnected from the deeper significance. The relationship between the two performers feels underdeveloped, which dilutes the impact of the finale.

The use of instruments adds a nice dynamic, but a more integrated approach could enhance the storytelling, rather than allowing it to feel passive. Incorporating scenes or interludes with stronger character connections could elevate the emotional weight of the revelations.

Despite these shortcomings, the production demonstrates remarkable storytelling talent. It’s a fun and descriptive experience, perfect for the Halloween season, but it could benefit from a tighter narrative focus.

Playing in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, it’s worth seeing for those who appreciate creative ghost stories.
