Review: MISS BREXIT, Omnibus Theatre

Imagine six actors in leotards, gyrating to Euro-techno-pop as they unapologetically kick off a whirlwind of brash, sexy, in-your-face chaos. That’s Miss Brexit for you—an unrestrained blend of satire, sass, and silliness.

The premise? A game show where five women from different European countries compete for the ultimate prize: staying and working in the UK post-Brexit. It’s a bizarrely fun spectacle that dares to poke fun at stereotypes and cultural quirks, and the contestants’ backstories weave in just enough charm to keep the energy high.

Our flamboyant host sets the tone with over-the-top movements and a flair for exaggerated enunciation, signalling that we’re in for a good time. And boy, are we! The audience interaction and improvised moments are hilariously engaging, making every performance feel fresh and unpredictable.

That said, we couldn’t help but feel the show missed an opportunity for sharper critique—especially given the backdrop of real-world Brexit headlines displayed at the beginning of the performance. With such poignant reminders of Brexit’s tangible effects on people’s lives, we craved a deeper dive into the heart of the issue. Satire thrives when it tackles the things that scare and frustrate us head-on, and a bit more of that edge could have made the show’s message resonate on a more meaningful level.

The production is undeniably rough around the edges, but that’s part of its charm. With some polish, it could go from delightful to dazzling. For now, Miss Brexit is an outrageous, uproarious musical romp that skewers just about everything in sight—and makes you laugh while doing it.
