Review: LITTLE PIECE OF YOU, Theatre Royal Drury Lane

Little Piece of You: An Atypical Musical in Concert presents a compelling exploration of depression through a unique concert format, featuring music and lyrics by Kjersti Long and Jeremy Long. The mise en concert effectively introduces us to the struggles of a mother battling her own demons, a daughter grappling with the loss of her idol to suicide, and a well-meaning father who feels powerless to help.

The concert is anchored by the vibrant pop songs, including the ironically titled ‘Sad Song’, performed by pop star Sydney Hill. The catchy tunes juxtapose the heavy themes, creating an interesting tension throughout the show. Vocal performances by Dujonna Gift and Mica Paris are nothing short of extraordinary, delivering powerful harmonies that resonate deeply with the audience.

However, despite these standout vocals, the overall production falls short. Technical issues detract from the experience, and the pacing of the acting feels a little sluggish. The text sometimes comes across as clichéd and predictable, lacking the depth necessary to elevate the story. Transitions with the ensemble feel lazy, failing to integrate the musical and narrative elements seamlessly.

While Little Piece of You showcases incredible talent and memorable songs, it ultimately feels disconnected. The potential of its themes and performances is undermined by a lack of cohesive storytelling. It’s an enjoyable concert experience, but one that leaves you wishing for a stronger narrative to match its impressive vocal prowess.
