Les Misérables, based on the epic novel written by Victor Hugo, is a profound exploration of human resilience, compassion, and justice. Hugo's work remains impactful because it addresses universal themes and the complexities of the human condition with both depth and empathy. Claude-Michel Schönberg’s music and Herbert Kretzmer’s English lyrics combine to create a deeply moving experience. The score’s rich, emotional themes really underscore the story's exploration of human struggle, redemption, and the quest for justice. Songs such ‘I Dreamed a Dream’, ‘Do You Hear the People Sing?’, and ‘One Day More’ resonate with audiences because they tap into universal emotions and challenges. The musical’s ability to blend powerful music with such a poignant narrative is a big part of why it’s so impactful.

The set design in Les Misérables is renowned for its creativity and effectiveness. The revolving platform is a key feature that allows for seamless transitions between the various settings, such as the prison, Parisian streets, and French countryside. This dynamic approach not only enhances the visual impact but also helps to keep the narrative flowing smoothly, immersing the audience in the different environments without the need for extensive scene changes. The use of this revolving set has become iconic in theatrical productions, showcasing how innovative design can contribute significantly to storytelling.

The orchestrations really enhance the emotional depth of the story. Claude-Michel Schönberg’s score, with lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, is powerful and sweeping, adding so much to the dramatic impact. And the cast's vocal performances are often breathtaking. The combination of those soaring melodies and deeply felt performances creates an experience that's both moving and unforgettable. Many of the audience members were moved to tears thoughout the musical.

Les Misérables is such a powerful show and seeing it live at Ensemble Arts in Philadelphia was an amazing experience. The current North American tour, starring Nick Cartell, Preston Truman Boyd, Matt Crowle, Mya Rena Hunter, Delaney Guyer and understudy Emily Fink, gives a truly memorable performance that cannot be missed. The live theatre experience has a way of connecting you to the emotions and artistry in a profound way that is irreplaceable.

Evocative and poignant.
