Review: IKARIA, Park Theatre London
A memorable performance and a deeply layered love story grappling with salvation found in the other.
Philippa Lawford’s first play Ikaria, a production she adeptly directs alongside Associate Director/Producer Izzy Parriss, feels instinctive and effortless. It manages to dive into some profound issues and articulates compelling perspectives on class dynamics, familial relationships, mental health, and the intricacies of human connections while remaining conversational.
The initial encounter introduces us to two university students, impeccably portrayed by James Wilbraham as Simon and Andrea Gatchalian as Mia. What initially presents itself as an endearing coming-of-age romantic comedy gradually metamorphoses into a darker narrative, unraveling Simon's struggles with depression against the backdrop of a burgeoning relationship.
The palpable chemistry between the actors is evident from the play's onset, and we immediately root for these young characters to find a way to one another despite the awkwardness and nerves synonymous with university dating.
The exploration of youthful romance transcends mere infatuation, evolving into a poignant portrayal of a young woman grappling with the inability to rescue a tormented soul, and a young man navigating the complexities of seeking help amidst his depression which he has yet to comprehend.
While distinctly contemporary, this tragic narrative pays homage to classical texts such as The Odyssey and weaves references to Greek tragedies bringing to life this allegorical play.
We quickly start to understand that the shadows that haunt this character are much darker than initially appear.
James Wilbesham takes the writing and elevates it into one of the most impactful performances we’ve seen this year. His expressive eyes articulate unspoken emotions, and his physicality, though detailed and minimalist, carries significant weight.
Another impactful production that makes us want to come back to the Park Theatre because regardless of the production, we always leave with the physical play. The writing is just that good.
