I Love You, Now What? at the Park Theatre is an emotionally gripping production that delves into the complexities of love, loss, and healing. Directed by Toby Clarke and written by Sophie Craig, the play draws from Craig’s personal experiences, offering an authentic exploration of anticipatory grief and the aftermath of losing a loved one.

The narrative centres around Ava and Theo, whose evolving relationship is depicted with a slow-burning intensity. Initially, their interactions are marred by somewhat clichéd exchanges but as the story progresses, their chemistry becomes more palpable and compelling. The audience witnesses the transformation of their bond, which is both realistic and deeply moving.

A standout element of the production is the performance of the actor playing Grandpa. His portrayal of a man grappling with the various stages of illness is profoundly touching. The actor’s ability to transition seamlessly into the role of a bereavement therapist further showcases his versatility and emotional depth. This dual role is handled with such finesse that it leaves a lasting impact on the audience, underscoring themes of transformation and resilience.

One of the most notable features of the play is the innovative use of a piano as a central prop. Serving as a ‘god-holding device’, the piano is strategically used to mark different locations and the passage of time, helping the audience navigate the shifts in the narrative. Despite its symbolic importance, there is a lingering sense of disappointment as the piano is rarely played, missing an opportunity to add a richer auditory dimension to the storytelling.

The production’s technical aspects are equally commendable, particularly the lighting design by Pablo Fernandez Baz, which significantly enhances the emotional tone of the play. The lighting not only highlights the transitions between scenes but also accentuates the emotional state of the characters, adding a layer of visual storytelling that complements the script.

The play’s success can be traced back to its debut at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it garnered attention for its heartfelt narrative and strong performances.

One of the most telling signs of the play’s emotional impact is observed at the end of the performance, with audience members visibly moved, including a lady holding tissues—a testament to the play’s ability to touch hearts and evoke profound emotional responses.

I Love You, Now What? is a deeply moving theatrical experience that combines powerful performances, innovative stagecraft, and a heartfelt narrative. It’s a play that not only entertains but also invites the audience to reflect on their own experiences with love and loss, making it a must-see production this summer at the Park Theatre.
