Fringe review: HELLO KITTY MUST DIE, Alchemation - Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Based on the cult novel by Angela S Choi and brought to the fringe by the Tony award-winning producer of Six, this is the world premiere of a musical mash-up of Asian feminism with a killer score.

Fiona Yu is a high achieving, but also highly disillusioned young Chinese-American woman. Fed up with stereotypes forced on her by a white, patriarchal society - mainly that she is the human embodiment of a speechless cartoon feline; you'd be dead wrong to underestimate her!

The musical is an unhealthy combination of sex, violence, drugs and feminine power. The tunes are catchy and move the story along suitably and the cast are superbly talented. Moving between characters seamlessly, you'd be forgiven for not realising what a small cast this actually is.

The set is practically non existent. Just a few chairs and a couple of tables, but it doesn't need any more, the focus remains on the story and the talent telling it.

If you like musicals (this has a Heathers vibe about it, in particular), then this is a must visit at the Fringe this year.

Musical vengeance at its best.
