Review: Girl Power, Thespie
With the West End once again closed and venues up and down the country only just beginning to come back to life, the theatre withdrawal is real but through all of these long hard months, creatives have embraced the power of the internet and brought performance into our homes.
Thespie may be a relatively new service but it is already providing the goods with its catalogue of filmed performances and movie musicals alongside its recently launched ‘Reunited’ concert series. We have already been treated to a Stephen Schwartz spectacular and a concert from the stars of & Juliet, and now Thespie is back with the third instalment, Girl Power; a girl band-themed concert from some of the stars from hit musical Six.
This concert features seven incredibly talented performers: Millie O’Connell, Aimie Atkinson, Alexia McInstosh, Jarneia Richard-Noel, Natalie Paris, Grace Mouat and Maiya Quansah-Breed. The girls come together in this fun-filled concert, which travels through time via girl bands, starting with a performance of ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’ all the way through to the closing performance of Little Mix’s ‘Power’.
Unlike Thespie’s other concerts, which saw a mixture of solo’s, duets and group numbers performed, Girl Power goes all out on the girl band vibe with each song featuring all seven performers. There is something for everyone with songs including ‘Up The Ladder to the Roof’ by The Supremes and ‘Too Much’ by The Spice Girls. It was a nice change to see the girls step away from performing musical theatre numbers and whilst not all the songs are to my personal taste, they are very well performed.
Filmed live at The Oval Space, the concert features some big dance moments interspersed with sit-down performances, plus moments of conversation between the girls that allows us to get to know them better. They talk about their inspirations in life and music, and touch on important topics such as body positivity and the importance of embracing your sexuality.
This concert is packed full of performances and a wonderful sense of fun. You can really see the sisterhood and friendship between the girls and it is clear that they are so happy to be performing together again. The quality of this concert from Thespie is second to none and it really is the next best thing to actually being there in person. Filmed performances will never replace the thrill of a live show but whilst we cannot attend many live performances right now, at least we have Thespie as a good alternative.
