Review: GINGER JOHNSON - GINGER ALL THE WAY!, Soho Theatre

Fresh from her win of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Series 5, the angel of the North (East) that is Ginger Johnson brings her Christmas cabaret, Ginger All the Way, to Soho Theatre.

The show is a mish mash of live song, comedy and skits. It has enough references to Drag Race to please those who know Ginger from there, but doesn’t alienate those who may not have watched.

This show doesn’t miss the mark when it comes to music. Joined by a live pianist, Ginger’s deep vocals take us to everything from high camp to solemnity with a real pathos. The comedy lyrics are genius in Ginger’s own numbers and familiar numbers appear with comedic reworkings. On the other end of the scale, the numbers that are sung straightforwardly are beautifully performed and don’t feel out of place despite the comedic tone of the night. A real atmosphere is also created subtly throughout the show from the lighting design, never drawing the focus away from Ginger but enhancing the moment and enticing us into Ginger’s world in whatever particular slice is being shared.

Ginger Johnson is a seasoned performer and we feel safe in her hands as the audience. Perhaps, though, Ginger’s recent success has given her some high expectations. The jokes that land are zingers, but not all of the comedy does land. Some sections are funny but go on a little too long to keep the initial amusement going and others felt like they need some work. Two sections also require Ginger to have notes up on stage in the guise of props which somewhat detracts from the performance. Despite this, Ginger owns every moment in that Soho main house and you can’t help wanting more of that goofy glamorous queen.

Ginger All the Way! is a good night out. Although it needs some polishing, you’ll come out with a big grin and be chuckling all the way home.

*** Three stars
