Review: GIN CRAZE, Royal & Derngate - Northampton

A new musical set in the 18th century and the Royal auditorium of the Royal and Derngate Theatre in Northampton gave it the perfect setting.   With its classic surrounds and proscenium arched stage, added to by the atmospheric noise of street chatter that can be heard as you take your seats in the auditorium, this intimate setting is perfect for making the audience feel as if they are eavesdropping on the life that is taking place on stage.

Gin Craze is centred around the women of Gin Lane.  The story follows two lovers who, whilst trying to keep their secrets hidden, try their hand as gin hawkers.  At a time when gin was extremely popular and women were locked up in cells to sober up, disorder is everywhere.  Panic is spreading amongst the upper classes, but are the magistrates, the church or even the Queen, (who is not afraid of a tipple herself), able to restore order amongst the lower classes?

Lucy De Angelis’ script is heavily satirical, very witty and performed impeccably by a strong, all -round talented cast of actor musicians, who also move and sing like they’re one complete unit.

A special mention to Debbie Chazen who plays Moll/Queen Caroline. Not only did she have some of the best lines, but also delivers them with perfect comic timing and natural rhythm.

The score by Lucy Rivers is hilariously written, with catchy tunes that have the audience tapping their feet and clapping their hands. They could have easily been sat in a tavern supping gin from a tankard and singing along themselves!

This production delivers on every level, with perfect performances and laughs throughout.

Running at the Royal and Derngate until 31 July, we can only hope that this unique and fresh production gets a UK tour very soon.

Absolutely brilliant!
