Review: CLASSIC!, Hope Mill Theatre - The Pleasance (Edinburgh Festival Fringe)
Bringing 42 novels to life in just 60 minutes, Classic! is fast paced and brilliantly funny. Written by Lindsay Williams and Peter Kerry (script writers for Coronation Street), there is no need to have read all - or indeed any - of the literary favourites that are brought to life; in fact, look at all the reading time you will have saved just by watching for an hour!
Directed by Joyce Branagh (sister of Kenneth), it’s not just a presentation of novels. There’s a sea shanty, silent movie, film noir, pantomime, an array of props and costumes - the possibilities are simply endless!
With a cast of just six performers (Louis Blair, Althea Burey, Amy Drake, Amy Gavin, Robin Simpson and Gareth Tempest),it is clear that the stage is awash with talent and experience.
They are hilariously funny, including some of the audience as basic characters with the use of various hats etc. It’s time well spent at the Fringe.
This production will not disappoint so treat yourself to an afternoon of Moby Dick, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Oliver, Black Beauty, War and Peace and many, many more!
Mesmerising, hypnotic and laugh out loud funny!
***** Five stars
