Review: CINDERELLA, New Victoria Theatre Woking
There’s nothing like a Fairy Godmother and a sprinkle of magic fairy dust to get you in the festive spirit, Besties, and Cinderella in Woking does just that!
Starring comedy legend Brian Conley as Buttons and an all-round talented cast of performers, this is one panto not to be missed off your Christmas list.
Written by Michael Harrison and Brian Conley, we follow Cinderella as she goes from rags to riches with the help of her Fairy Godmother and her best friend Buttons.
Thwarted by her two villainous Step Sisters, will she make it to the ball? Will she meet her Prince Charming? Will it all end happily ever after?
Conley is the ultimate funny man, as expected, and having played Buttons numerous times previously, it is no surprise that he appears at home in the role. His comedy style is as fresh as ever and audiences have plenty of laugh out loud moments to enjoy.
Jenny Gayner is the Fairy Godmother, bringing sparkle and a cheeky smile to the stage; her musical theatre prowess evident in the dance numbers.
Neal Wright and Ben Stock, as Claudia and Tess respectively (Cinderella’s step-sisters), are equally funny, yet likable in their naivety and ‘booable’ in their treatment of Cinderella. Outrageous costumes complete the duo’s characterisation and are adapted into the script well.
Sarah Vaughan as Cinderella, Samuel Wilson-Freeman as Prince Charming, and Steve Leeds as Dandini complete the line-up of main characters and complement each other well, with good relationships between them and stunning vocals throughout.
The choreography by Jane McMurtrie is remarkable and performed with perfection by the ensemble cast and with the lighting design by Chris Winn and costumes by Mike Coltman working in unison to make the finished package look incredible.
So, for an exciting evening of laughs, enchantment, stunning scenery and a fairy-tale ending, head to Woking for this year’s production of Cinderella.
A sparkling, magical production for everyone!
***** Five stars
