Review: CHICAGO, Mayflower Theatre Southampton (International tour)

Chicago: The Musical has been around for a long time. Whether you have fond memories of watching the stage show or you’ve only seen the film adaptation starring Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta Jones, you will have come across the sexy and hyperactive story of Roxie and Velma.

As two women locked in a cell for a crime they have (or may not have!) committed, they tell their stories with such energy and enthusiasm, you can scarcely believe they are guilty – which, of course, is entirely the point. Having originally made its initial debut in the West End in 1979, this touring production starring Faye Brookes as Roxie Hart and Djalenga Scott as Velma Kelly is a refreshing and uplifting musical revival that will, no doubt, be loved by so many.

The cast of this show are phenomenal. The chorus embody the heart and soul of Bob Fosse’s choreographic style and it is pristine. The choreography is sharp, precise and incredibly aesthetically pleasing to watch. The complexity behind some of the shapes they create and the lifts cannot be faulted. The lighting used in conjunction with the choreography compliments it perfectly, with beautiful silhouettes emerging throughout the performance. The shadows give the illusion that the company is bigger than it is, making it truly appear more prison-like – the idea of having their secret hiding amongst the shadows is haunting and a beautiful addition to the story.

The show is full of some fantastic moments, many of which the audience are clearly excited for. The energetic and upbeat rendition of the ‘Cell Block Tango’, in which all of the woman are sexy, sassy and deadly. The introduction to Billy Flynn’s character – played by the handsome and charming Darren Day – and the energy that comes from his performance, the use of large white feathers makes the performance feel innocent in the sense that he is the saving grace, and really highlights the importance of his character within the musical. The innocent and charming Amos, performed by the stunning and warm Joel Montague, is nothing short of exemplary. We have all felt a little bit like Amos sometimes - as though we are a piece of cellophane that people can see through and his performance is smooth and gracefully done. And while he does not have any exit music, he does get a large cheer and applause from the audience. And of course, the opening performance of ‘All That Jazz’ is truly something to behold. Djalenga Scott performs that number with such ease and grace, that it is both sexy and captivating for all audience members.

A massive shout out must also be given to the very talented orchestra and their bundle-of-joy conductor – the show would not have the same energy and passion behind it, had it not been for their beautiful and soulful rendition of the 1920s-inspired music we all know and love.

But of all the performances on the stage, we are completely taken aback by the talent and skill that lies at the feet of Faye Brookes. My my, what a stunning performance she gives! The balance she gives to her performance of Roxie Hart makes it entertaining yet believable – the comedic characterisation blends perfectly with her moments of intense emotion. Her singing voice is absolutely beautiful – she is first heard at the beginning of the show in ‘Funny Honey’ and not only does she sing with complete control, she is also standing on a ladder, relatively high up. Her choreographic ability is strong and she delivers every performance with energy, passion and lot of playfulness. She teases the audience and has everyone captivated and on the edge of their seats. We were all hooked by her from the start.

This international touring production of Chicago: The Musical will be running until late July next year so find a theatre near you to witness this incredible revival! Tickets to see this production will make a perfect gift this festive period. Allow yourself to be captivated by the Razzle Dazzle that this show has to offer. Besties, this is not one to be missed!
