Review: CASH POINT MEET, Obstreperous Young Ladies - Edinburgh Fringe (Online)
Marking the debut of writer Niamh Murphy, Cash Point Meet follows Emma and Sinead when they stumble across an opportunity to go from cheap wine to limos and Louboutin’s, but is it really that easy? Is happiness just a swipe away?
Spanning over a year of their lives, it is a dark yet comic exploration into the world of the sex trade, labour rights and intimacy, the characters they encounter and the consequences of their decisions.
For anyone who is not aware (and we weren’t before watching this piece), a ‘Cash Point Meet’ is when you meet a stranger at a cash point and they hand over either money or their bank card and in return, you have to be unpleasant to them in some way.
Both Murphy, who also stars as Emma, and Ava Hahessy Madigan as Sinead give strong, truthful performances throughout. Their individual stories are honest, heartfelt and amusingly written, which make them easy characters to warm to.
Directed by Cara Bradley, the production is informative (who would have classed this as sex work?) and engaging. Its timely themes are significant and portrayed in a way whereby you can understand just how easy it would be to find yourself in the same or similar situation, without judgement or discredit.
Cash Point Meet is an important piece of drama and is another highlight of the Edinburgh Festival.
Should not be missed for both entertainment and educational value.
**** Four Stars.
