Review: CABARET ALL STARS FT BILL BAILEY, Proud Embankment

Bill Bailey 4 stars

Wow, Besties, we had a dazzling time at Cabaret All Stars Ft. Bill Bailey last night! If you’re looking for one of the hottest nights in town, then look no further than Proud, situated on London’s Victoria Embankment.

The atmosphere is electric from the outset, with pure merriment and intrigue filling the air. The décor of the club is very in keeping with the Burlesque theme, as are the servers’ costumes (who all work incredibly hard all night).

Ritzy Crackers, our first compere of the evening, is a real firecracker. With a medley from Cabaret, she sets the tone of the event in style, clearly at home onstage and with a crowd, warming the audience up brilliantly.

What stands out to us the most is the sheer talent and skill of the performers. From enticing burlesque numbers to sword-eating to mime, the artists are all clearly doing what they love and performing something that they’ve invested entire careers doing. It is inspiring to watch, and the tricks are often jaw-dropping (so much so that we often find ourselves forgetting to eat!)

Sometimes it feels disrespectful to be eating or be served in the middle of a burlesque routine or song, so we would definitely suggest more intervals or designated eating breaks. Clearly the performers are unphased though and it is certainly a novelty to be serenaded and entertained while we eat. Perhaps towards the end, a few of the numbers felt similar to those we’d seen earlier on but we were completely wowed by the dexterity and expertise of aerialists from Brazil and artists who returned to the stage showcasing a different talent to their earlier one.

Praise must be awarded to the stage management team who catch every tassel, feather, and corset that comes their way, making sure that the stage is always a safe space and keeping everything running smoothly. Their role really is invaluable and it is great to see them being celebrated by the artists and comperes throughout the night. The lighting is also really intriguing, setting the mood for each act and changing in harmony with dances and routines, utilising spotlights really well.

Of course, we must mention the man himself, Bill Bailey. Although seeming slightly distracted at times, Bailey’s raw musical talent is a complete joy to watch. One minute we are laughing at comedy lyrics and the next we could have closed our eyes and been sung to sleep by his lilting finger picking on the guitar. He champions each act and provides great transitions between numbers, living up to his reputation as an entertainer and it is a privilege to see him live.

What’s clear to see is the passion each artist has for their craft and also the support they have for each other and for being back onstage in front of a live audience. If you’re looking for a night of jaw-dropping skill, seduction, and something a little different, then look no further than Proud Embankment.
