Boys on the Verge of Tears offers a poignant exploration of masculinity within the confined space of a male restroom. The set design is both magnificent and realistic, capturing the essence of this intimate yet multifaceted environment. From a father guiding his son through a milestone moment to teenagers navigating the complexities of school life, the set becomes a stage for a multitude of stories to unfold.

The play masterfully weaves together various narratives, beliefs, and experiences of men across generations, all within the backdrop of a single location. The measured pace of the production allows each moment to resonate, drawing the audience into the intricacies of the male experience. The cast of five deliver impeccable performances, seamlessly transitioning between roles and ages with remarkable skill.

Through its exploration of the heteronormative experience, Boys on the Verge of Tears delves into the gritty, often humorous, and sometimes heartbreaking realities of manhood. It offers insight into the societal pressures and expectations placed upon men, prompting reflection on the challenges they face. As a woman watching, I am personally reminded of the complexities of masculinity and the importance of empathy in understanding the male perspective.

The play's ability to evoke a range of emotions—from sadness to laughter—speaks to its depth and authenticity. It tackles themes of identity, camaraderie, and vulnerability with sensitivity and nuance. Ultimately, Boys on the Verge of Tears is a thought-provoking exploration of what it means to be a man in today's world, leaving audiences with a deeper understanding of the human experience.

Winner of the prestigious Verity Bargate Award for new writing, this production marks a significant debut guided by the skilled direction of James Macdonald. With its captivating storytelling and compelling performances, Boys on the Verge of Tears is a must-see theatrical experience. And remember gentlemen, please wash your hands.
