Review: BLUEPRINTS: A DIGITAL ADVENTURE, Lobster Frock Theatre Company – Online

If you could redo your childhood and start again, would you?  Who else could you be? Who else would you want to be?  These are the questions put to us in Blueprints; a virtual one-to-one experience in our own home where we delve into an unexpected, macabre world of surreal characters and intriguing choices.

It has been created to feel as live and immersive as possible, to challenge our senses and wits whilst navigating the trauma of growing up.  We are asked questions along the way that, once answered, will define the development and length of the journey.  An accompanying sensory box containing various items with instructions, either on the item itself or appearing on screen, enhances the experience for us.

Directed by Kirsty Blewett (who is also the founder of the company), it is apparent that this is a diverse feminist piece, much as Lobster Frock are renowned for producing.  The cast are all female but this brings with it a nurturing feeling of childhood that the piece is based around, rather than an equal rights message. The sound design by Antigoni Spanou and video editing by Matthew Kaltenborn are superb, making the whole immersive experience easy to enter and enjoy.

If you’re looking for something a bit unusual to help you escape from real life, this is definitely what you need.  You get as much out of it as you put in, so be prepared to click on everything you can and use all the items in your sensory box.

Diverse, enthralling escapism!
