Review: BHANGRA NATION, The Birmingham REP
Bhangra Nation, originating from the musical premiered in 2022 as Bhangin’ It in La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego, made its UK debut in Birmingham. The story follows Mary and Preeti, members of a school's Bhangra dance team, navigating their cultural identities amidst their shared passion for dance.
Mary wishes to integrate Kathak into their routine, while Preeti insists on preserving traditional bhangra. This leads to a dynamic showdown reminiscent of Pitch Perfect. As Mary decides to create a rival dance team open to all, with the express desire to include all Desi styles of dance from Bhangra to Kathak to Bollywood. Preeti becomes the cultural advisors for the original completive dance team the ELU T.I.G.R.E.S.
The narrative explores the Desi experience in the USA, (Desi is an encapsulating term referring to persons with connections to South Asia) blending authenticity with theatrical elements which is also mirrored in the music and lyrics. The production, though facing some costume and set design challenges, excels in its portrayal of self-discovery and cultural belonging. Bhangra Nation celebrates the universality of dance and leaves audiences uplifted and inspired.
Jena Pandya effortlessly leads the show as the bright-eyed, sweet, and relatable Mary. Her Disney-esque voice lends texture and depth to some of the more haunting melodies. Zaynah Ahmed delivers a powerful performance as Preeti, showcasing her strong vocals amidst the relentless choreography by Rujuta Vaidya, demonstrating a masterclass in athleticism. David Grinrod's casting excels in representing the diverse regions of South Asia and the myriad of cultures found in today's high schools. Special mention to Tia Antoine-Charles whose vocals soared around the rep theatre.
Guaranteed to have you researching your local bhangra class this is a toe tapping story of discovery filled with infectious music and the most colourful stage in the midlands.
