Review: ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND, Future Spotlight Productions (Online)
The classic tale of Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice in Wonderland has been portrayed in many different styles over the years and this new online production is one of the most delightful.
We follow Alice on her adventure down the rabbit hole as she chases the White Rabbit and encounters strange characters such as the Madhatter, the March Hare, the Dormouse, the Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar and of course the Queen of Hearts. She drinks from a bottle and shrinks to become smaller and takes a bite from a cake to grow to be gigantic. Attends a ‘mad’ tea party and plays croquet on the Queen’s lawn, whilst helping to paint the roses red.
It all sounds quite exhausting!
This 40-minute online production is all-singing, all-dancing, (with choreography by Rachel Sargent). Directed by Louis Rayneau (who also stars as an adorable White Rabbit), the piece includes cleverly adapted pop songs from Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Pink and Demi Lovato, so there is something for all family members across generations to enjoy together.
There are nice hints of future characters in the opening sequence (Mad Hatter, March Hare, Dormouse) in a Wizard of Oz style and the effects used for Alice’s shrinking and growth are realistic and believable.
Beccy Lane in the title role as Alice is a strong all-rounder, with good make-up and costumes by Patricia Rayneau throughout, although potentially a little more could have been done with the Cheshire Cat. However, the production is aesthetically pleasing and filming it at KidZania in London gives it the perfect back drop.
If you’re in need of something to entertain the kids during the school holidays, Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland is an easy solution.
Witty, engaging and charming, a must-see production.
