Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Old Vic Theatre

Matthew Warchus’s A Chrismas Carol at The Old Vic is a magical and uplifting festive play for the season, which without fail puts a smile on everyone’s face.

The cast are heavily ensemble focused and form a beautiful whole, from the very opening number with stunning harmonising and bell playing; the level of detail of which is very impressive.

The cruciform set design by Rob Howell is dynamic and innovative; bringing the audience into intimate proximity to the cast. Swinging lanterns, ghost-like apparitions, and even snow falls towards the finale - the team certainly put on a show, but all is tastefully done in good measure and for clear storytelling purposes.

Every element from the acting, costume and set, sound design, adaptation and direction are harmoniously crafted into a beautifully atmospheric and moving show, with truly tear jerking moments that would melt even the iciest of British hearts into leaning into the full glory of the cheesy Christmas spirit (even as early as November). Special mention must be given to Casey-Indigo Blackwood-Lashley playing Tiny Tim who truly stole all of our hearts.

This is a joyous and atmospheric show that keeps an important classic alive, spreading a wonderful message and is a reminder of generosity and empathy towards the end of what has been a trying year.
