It’s at this time of year that the old Dickensian classic, A Christmas Carol, comes out in various forms at theatres across the land.  The tale has been told in many ways over the years, but this production by the Old Joint Stock Theatre is a new one entirely.

Three ghosts, (Christmas Past, Present and Future), take a miserly Ebenezer Scrooge on a journey through his lifetime in order to teach him the true meaning of Christmas, only this story is being told from a radio studio in 1940’s America.

There is an abundance of talent within this cast as Michael Crump, Blake Heaven, Karina Holness and Elloise Thomson take on various character roles alongside Nick Delvalle as Scrooge.  Directed by Adam Lacey, with assistant direction by Alexandra Whiteley, we are transported to the radio studio where a live recording is about to take place.

Complete with a warm up act of Christmas carols and practice applause, we are welcomed into the intimate performance space relaxed, comfortable and ready to be entertained.

Having the whole cast narrate, as well as take on the character roles, is a nice touch and keeps our attention focused on the story telling.  With various accents used to differentiate between characters, it is far less confusing actually being able to see that there is only a handful of actors than you might think.  

Clever sound effects from a props table at the back of the stage successfully creates, amongst other scenes, the haunting atmosphere when we are introduced to Marley’s Ghost as the cast rattle chains.

It’s a family friendly story that we all know and love and this production freshens it up for audiences.  The added touch of the radio jingles is amusing and nostalgic and works nicely amongst the traditional story.

A great night out - highly entertaining!
