Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL - A GHOST STORY, Birmingham Rep
If you’re looking for a show to get you into the festive spirit, A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story at Birmingham REP is the perfect choice. This reimagining of Dickens’ classic, brought to life by Mark Gatiss, is fresh, immersive, and packed with moments that’ll make you jump, laugh, and perhaps even shed a tear. Whether you know the story from the original book or the iconic Muppets film, this version offers something new—and it’s bound to stay with you long after the curtain falls.
First staged in winter 2023 at the Nottingham Playhouse, this reviewer can happily confirm that the production remains as magical and immersive as ever. It’s a joy to see this spectacular adaptation now enchanting new audiences at the Birmingham REP.
The plot? Classic Christmas vibes with a twist of ghostly spookiness. Ebenezer Scrooge is a wealthy but miserable man who can’t stand the idea of generosity, let alone Christmas. On Christmas Eve, the ghost of his equally grumpy business partner Marley rocks up to warn Scrooge that his selfish ways are leading him down a dark path. Still stubborn, Scrooge is then visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, who force him to face some harsh truths, shift his perspective, and realise that giving is as rewarding as receiving.
What makes this production stand out is its inventive staging. Paul Wills’ set design transforms the REP stage into a towering maze of wobbling filing cabinets that twist and turn, revealing surprise locations and stunning visuals. Matthew Cottle is brilliant as Scrooge, delivering a mix of sharp wit and sharp-tongued cruelty while still showing glimmers of the man he could become. But the show isn’t just about Scrooge—this is a true ensemble piece. Director Adam Penford makes sure every cast member shines, whether through heartfelt songs, clever puppetry, or moments that genuinely make the audience gasp.
The diverse casting reflects the vibrant, multicultural spirit of Birmingham, making this 19th-century tale feel totally relevant today. It’s also worth noting that while this is a family-friendly show, the jump scares and ghostly atmosphere are probably best suited for ages 12 and up.
Every seat in the theatre offers a great view, from Phillip Gladwell’s striking lighting to Ella Wahlström’s spine-tingling sound effects, Nina Dunn’s eerie video projections, and John Bulleid’s impressive illusions (yes, actual magic!), the technical elements completely pull you into Scrooge’s world.
Whether you’re a theatre regular or just looking for something to do this Christmas, A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story at Birmingham REP is a must-see. Trust us, you’ll leave with all the festive feels—and maybe a few goosebumps too.
