Review: 101 DALMATIANS, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre

101 Dalmatians has finally bounded into Regents Park and, much like a new born puppy, whilst being incredibly cute, is a little confused and unsure of itself at first. But eventually manages to find its paws in Act 2 as a pantomime-like farce, just pure and simple surface level fun that younger children will be able to absolutely love.

It's certainly a fresh take on the *book* not the film (this show is not affiliated with Disney); Cruella (Kate Fleetwood) is adamant that she is an "Influencer" who sees the Dalmatians as a photo opportunity for her Instagram. This allows the musical to use modern terms in funny ways and although the world is never fully explored, it does create some comedic opportunities.

The source of much debate recently has admittedly been the material of this musical but we think that is because critics are watching with too much of an analytical eye; if a child were to watch this musical, they wouldn't see the issues that we, as adults, notice. This musical is most definitely for the younger members of the audience and if you can let out your own inner child, you'll be able to enjoy it too! And by the end you'll be clapping along to a rather fun tune. Which brings us on to the music...

Like the rest of the production, it is slightly inconsistent but absolutely does the job. Whilst many songs are not quite developed enough yet, there are several highlights including ‘Heads or Tails’, the genuinely hilarious ‘Turn Over a New Leaf’ and the finale, ‘One Hundred and One’. Children are bound to enjoy the upbeat tunes and welcoming friendly nature of the lyrics.

The show is particularly inconsistent in Act One as while Cruella is portrayed to be evil, in the Act One finale, she sings a ballad in a tone that almost, makes you feel for her. The woman wants to skin puppies alive! And these puppies are bought to life in a cluster of ensemble members holding heads and tails, which works well when they are all standing together but when isolated, it is difficult to see the Puppy for the Puppeteer. With a little more development, this musical could be fantastic as it has so much potential to be hilarious, truly feel good and a wonderful experience for all ages.

The highlight of the show is most definitely Casper and Jasper (Jonny Weldon and George Bukhari) who have such brilliant chemistry and comedic timing, they have everyone laughing out loud. We found ourselves wishing they were given their own number to enjoy the rapport they are able to build up with the audience. The set design from Colin Richmond is gorgeous, making the most of its Regent's Park location. And finally the children involved in this production (of which there are four each night) are fantastic, holding the stage by themselves with ease.

*** Three stars
