At WEBF, we are extremely saddened to hear about the passing of Broadway actor, Nick Cordero. As we celebrate the best theatre from across the pond on our Tony Tuesday, what better day to commemorate him.

The much-loved performer is best known for originating the role of Earl in the Broadway hit Waitress and for his Tony and Drama Desk-nominated performance as Cheech in Woody Allen & Susan Stroman’s Bullets Over Broadway. He also starred as the title role in Off-Broadway’s The Toxic Avenger and Dennis in Rock of Ages.

Cordero spent 91 days in hospital after being diagnosed with Covid-19. Due to the quick worsening of his condition, he was placed in a medically induced coma so he could receive further treatment.

Although he was eventually given the all clear from coronavirus, he battled with multiple infections and low blood pressure, which led to having his right leg amputated. Whilst he did regain consciousness, he was only able to communicate with his eyes.

Cordero’s wife, Amanda Kloots, said that he his best hope was a double lung transplant but whilst he fought, he sadly died on 5 July.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Cordero’s family and friends at this difficult time.

A GoFundMe campaign has been raising money for Cordero’s family, including his one-year-old son Elvis, and they have raised over $930,000 to date. If you wish to donate, please click here.
