It has been announced that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star Sally Anne Howes has sadly passed away aged 91.

The actress is best known for played Truly Scrumptious in the 1968 musical film alongside Dick Van Dyke.

Howes enjoyed a 60 year career on both screen and stage, with her big break coming when she replaced Julie Andrews in My Fair Lady on Broadway.

Howes notably starred in shows including A Little Night Music, Camelot, and Cinderella, and won a Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical in 1963 for Brigadoon.

Following her success in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Howes returned to the stage as she enjoyed “connecting with the audience.”

Throughout the late 1970s, she toured the UK with The King and I, and the US with The Sound of Music.

Her more recent performance was in the 2007 US tour of My Fair Lady, when she appeared as Mrs Higgins in the Cameron Macintosh production.

Our thoughts are with her friends and family at this difficult time.
