It has been announced that Glynis Johns, best known for playing Winifred Banks in the 1964 Disney film Mary Poppins, has sadly passed away aged 100.

The British actress has had an illustrious career spanning six decades, having appeared in many films and theatre productions.

Johns won a Tony Award in 1973 for her performance as Desiree Armfeldt in A Little Night Music on Broadway, with Sondheim writing ‘Send in the Clowns’ specifically for her to sing. She wasn’t able to play the role in the 1977 film version though, losing out to Elizabeth Taylor.

She was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 1960 film, The Sundowners.

Johns’ most recent acting roles were in the 1995 film While You Were Sleeping alongside Sandra Bullock, and Superstar in 1999 starring Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell.

Following this, she retired to the US, living out her final years in assisted living in Hollywood where she died peacefully, her manager reported.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.
