QUIET REBELS to embark on tour this Autumn
A new show about women who fell in love with men of the Windrush generation, Quiet Rebels, will tour the country in Autumn 2022, it has been announced.
The play is written and directed by Julie McNamara and Hassan Mahamdallie and is a co-production with Dervish Productions, Vital Xposure, and Belgrade Theatre, in partnership with Soul City Arts and The Albany, Deptford.
Quiet Rebels is based on the true but forgotten stories of white working-class women and the men they fell in love with. They defied race and class, prejudice, and social stigma directed against them and their families. This play is a drama-noir, with film, music, and movement, set in a dystopian, authoritarian state England where people who marry across race lines are considered traitors.
McNamara and Mahamdallie’s extensive research into the forgotten stories gives voice to the stories of these unsung women, who faced hostility, battled discrimination, and showed courage in the face of racism, class, and gender prejudice who lay the foundations of the multi-cultural society we enjoy today. The question is posed: “Were these women treated as if they committed a crime against society?” McNamara and Mahamdallie are extremely passionate about getting these stories told through theatre.
Julie McNamara said: “I have been seething with rage at the devastating impact of successive governments’ casual disregard of the contribution of black people and communities of colour in shaping the country we live in today. And so Quiet Rebels was born.”
The cast includes Lottie Bell, Joe Conteh, Deni Francis, and Fiona Whitelaw. Quiet Rebels will premiere at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry from 10 September before touring to Nottingham, London, Liverpool, Salford, Newcastle, Oxford, Wolverhampton, Ormskirk, and Sheffield, before completing its run at The Albany in London on 11 November.
