Preview: Crescent Theatre Birmingham Autumn/Winter season launch

The Crescent Theatre is one of Birmingham’s oldest theatre companies and offers a wide variety of productions throughout the year.

They have just announced their programme for Autumn/Winter 2022/2023, on both their Studio and Main House stages, beginning with musical I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change in the Studio from 17-24 September, which played over 5000 performances Off-Broadway. It tackles modern love in all its form with wit and ranges from first date to twilight years.

24 September–1 October in the Main House is Shakespeare in Love, based on the 1998 film about a playwright who shows great promise as theatres reopen after the plague (sound familiar?) and seeks a muse to cure his writers block, who he then promptly falls in love with.

Back to the Studio from 22–29 October for There Are No Beginnings, set in 1975 against the backdrop of the Yorkshire Ripper. It tells the story of three women in Leeds whose lives have been affected by the fallout of the ripper and the Police’s response to it with the Reclaim the Night movement and its relevance to this day.

Followed by The Duchess of Malfi from12–19 November, a thrilling and chilling Jacobean revenge tragedy exploring male rage and female resistance. When the widowed Duchess defies her family, she unleashes a murderous nightmare.

Their Christmas productions include the traditional A Christmas Wassail from 18–20 December, which promises to be brimming with Christmas spirit, and the previously announced The Snow Queen from 6–17 December.

The Mercy Seat continues the Studio programme from 21–28 January, set in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Ben was supposed to be in his office in the Twin Towers, instead he was with his boss Abby with whom he is having an affair.  Should he disappear and leave his wife and kids believing he has died and start a new life with Abby?

11–18 February sees the classic A Taste Of Honey, an era-defining play that initially changed British theatre, portraying vulnerabilities and strengths of the female spirit in post-war Britain as Helen’s mother runs off with a car salesman and Jo takes up with Jimmie, a sailor who promises to marry her, before heading off to sea.

Completing the season from 25 February-4 March is The Girl On The Train. Rachel Watson longs for a different life, her escape is watching the perfect couple through her train window, until one day the woman disappears and she becomes embroiled in a thrilling mystery which brings her bigger revelations than she could ever have imagined.
