Disney have announced at their D23 expo that a prequel to the 2019 live-action adaptation of The Lion King is set for release in 2024.

Mufasa: The Lion King will be directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), with a focus on how Simba's father rose from humble beginnings to become the ruler of all the Pridelands.

The story will be told in two timeframes by much loved characters: Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa.
