Speaking from the House of Commons this afternoon, Boris Johnson announced that socially distanced performances should be able to operate again from May.

The Prime Minister stated that 17 May would be the earliest that performances would be permitted to proceed, but this is a “tentative” date providing the number of Covid-19 cases continues to decrease.

It has been stressed that the dates given are “at earliest” dates and could be pushed back if necessary.

More promisingly, he also said that theatres may be able to open without social distancing from 21 June, pending conditions are met.

Each stage of the government’s plan will be driven by "data" and will depend on four “tests“:

  1. the success of the vaccine rollout

  2. the number of hospital admissions and deaths falling

  3. the amount of pressure on the NHS

  4. the impact of any variants

Further details will be announced in the 60-page roadmap document, which will be released later today.
