The nominations for the annual South Bank Sky Arts Awards have been announced today, with Life of Pi, Cyrano de Bergerac and Miriam-Teak Lee all up for awards. 

Sheffield Theatres’ productions, Standing at the Sky’s Edge and Life of Pi, have been nominated, alongside Jamie Lloyd’s Cyrano de Bergerac, which ran at the Playhouse Theatre. & Juliet’s Miriam-Teak Lee has been nominated for the breakthrough award, against Dafne Keen, star of BBC’s His Dark Materials, Rowan Pierce and Paris Fitzpatrick. The opera nominees include Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Birmingham Opera Company, Lolanta by Opera Holland Park and The Royal Opera’s Katya Kabanova. Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet, Northern Ballet’s Victoria and Ballet Black’s Ingoma are all up for the dance award. 

Artistic director of Sheffield Theatres Rob Hastie said: “Well over 200 people played a part in bringing these shows to the stage, which delighted Sheffield audiences and are ready to win new admirers in London and beyond as soon as we are all back up and running. After the tough year everyone’s had, it’s a joy to be able to celebrate the talented and dedicated people who made all three nominated shows, and the contribution they all make to the brilliance of British Theatre.” 

The event’s host Melvyn Bragg added: “This year’s awards will inevitably be a very different sort of event for very different circumstances, but nonetheless will be an inspiring and uplifting celebration of the remarkable talent and strength of many artists at the peak of their powers. The diverse and eclectic list of nominees in every category proves that there is much to enjoy in the arts – even in the toughest of times.”
