It has been announced that a new play, written as a collaboration between Palestinian playwright Ahmed Najar and Canadian-American writer Laura Hope-Gill, God’s Promises will run at the Cockpit Theatre from 16-18 September.

God’s Promises brings the tension and tragedy of evictions of Palestinians from their homes by Jewish settlers from the United States and Europe. In the play, Najar showcases the dynamics of this devastating and ongoing violation.

We meet Mohammed, who faces the challenge of finding a route from his house to his grandmother’s home in order to take her to hospital. The distance is not long, but he knows that there is a settler waiting outside his home waiting to claim it as their own. The dilemma between losing his home and getting to his grandmother shows how hard it is for him to continue with his normal life. 

Najar, who emigrated from Gaza in 2003, said that these stories are close to home for him. During the attacks earlier this year, he lived every day unsure whether Israeli bombs would strike his family and every day he hears of these evictions from friends and family.

He said: “This is a Palestinian story. There is a sentimental meaning to this play. It is not just that we have to be, or can be, reborn, but this is a story that continues across the generations. As Mohammed in ‘God’s Promises’ experiences, the situation continues until the story can be changed.”
