New season announced at Finborough Theatre
The Finborough Theatre have announced their January-April 2022 season which, as always, features unique rediscoveries with vibrant new writing in a programme that you can't see anywhere else.
The season opens with the long-overdue and previously reported English premiere of The Straw Chair by award-winning Scottish playwright Sue Glover, starring Siobhan Redmond. Inspired by a true story, The Straw Chair is a modern Scottish classic, exploring marriage, madness and incarceration against the backdrop of the lost way of life of the Western Isles. The Straw Chair plays from 4-29 January 2022.
The season continues with the world premiere of a British-Russian co-production, Bliss by multi-award-winning playwright Fraser Grace, which plays from 1-26 February 2022. Based on a short story by the brilliant but little-known Russian writer Andrey Platonov (1899-1951), Bliss is a colourful and strangely heart-warming tale of how the survivors of the Russian Revolution search for their ‘bliss’, and start to comprehend how a society needs time to recover from catastrophe.
The world premiere of the award-winning new play, Bacon by Sophie Swithinbank, plays from 1-26 March 2022. Directed by Finborough Theatre favourite Matthew Iliffe (Maggie May, The Niceties and Masks and Faces), Bacon is an unashamed and unexpectedly humorous look at masculinity, sexuality and power, through a smudged and heated teenage lens.
The season draws to a close with the return of the much-awaited final two weeks of Not Quite Jerusalem by Paul Kember, which was playing at the Finborough Theatre when they were closed down in March 2020 and was cancelled again due to Covid-19 in September 2021. It now plays from 5-16 April 2022. An award-winning comedy-drama from 1980, the year the Finborough Theatre first opened, originally produced in celebration of our 40th anniversary year, Not Quite Jerusalem is set on an Israeli kibbutz in 1979, and played to sell-out audiences for the first part of its original run.
