New musical DOMITIUS to debut at Conway Hall next month
New musical Domitius, about chasing one’s truest dream, is set to debut at ethical venue Conway Hall from 6-8 August.
Whilst many creative teams on West End shows have less than 7% underrepresented groups within them, Domitius boasts 50% of underrepresented groups, is 50% female and has been written by a trio of Asian, Black and white writers.
Domitius is a historic musical about Roman Emperor Nero with a contemporary humour and score twist (composed by shortlisted composer for NCEM’s Young Composer Award 2021). The team want musical theatre to rise from the devastating effects of the pandemic in the right way, as a more representative and diverse medium of modern British life and culture.
The creative team is made up of Henry Gu Cao (librettist), Lux Knightley (composer, librettist and MD), Luke McCormick (composer and conductor), Florence Odumosu (director) and Bethan Carys (choreographer), with the piece featuring performers Judy Blu, Stewart Briggs, Matt Colyer, Tom Driver, Malhalia Fontaine, Ben Gad-Briggs, Max Himmelreich, Hannah Kiss, David Malcolm, Reece Raymond, and Nicolle Smartt.
The Domitius Production Collective LLP hopes to encourage the West End in a positive change for their off-stage roles and encourage other young underrepresented writers and creators to pick up a pen. Domitius’ mission statement is ‘Championing diversity in new original Musical Theatre both on and off-stage’.
