The National Theatre has revealed that it will reopen in June with a new production of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood starring Michael Sheen, followed by new play After Life by Jack Thorne.

Directed by Lyndsey Turner, Under Milk Wood plays from 16 June and will also star Sian Phillips and Karl Johnson, alongside Sheen. It will play to socially distanced audiences in their Olivier space, which will remain in its current in-the-round configuration until early 2022. The piece is designed by Merle Hensel, with lighting by Tim Lutkin, sound by Donato Wharton and music by Edward-Rhys Harry.

The Dorfman will reopen on 2 June with After Life, also playing to socially distanced audiences. Based on the film by Hirokazu Kore-eda, the show is co-produced with Headlong and will be directed by Jeremy Herrin, with design by Bunny Christie, lighting by Neil Austin and sound by Tom Gibbons.

The cast appearing in After Life will be Olatunji Ayofe, Danielle Henry, Maddie Holliday, Togo Igawa, Anoushka Lucas, Kevin McMonagle, Simon Startin, Luke Thallon, June Watson and Millicent Wong.

Both shows will run until 24 July.

Further details on previously scheduled productions of The Normal Heart and Death of England: Delroy will be revealed shortly.
