Natalie Ibu reveals first season at Northern Stage

Natalie Ibu, the new Artistic Director of Northern Stage, has today revealed her first season of work, entitled ‘This Is Us’. The season includes outdoor, indoor and digital work that will take place in accordance with government guidance.

The season starts on 27 January with ‘Scroll’, a series of newly commissioned short stories, which will be available digitally on demand and are designed for audiences to experience “in the moments in-between, while waiting for the kettle to boil, standing in a queue.” It includes work by Bridget Minamore, Christ Sonnex, Adam Lenson, Daniel York Loh, Daniel Bye, Leo Skilbeck, Sampira, Uproot Productions and Tabby Lamb.

‘Can We Come in?’ will be available to stream from 22 February, including a collaboration with Actors Touring Company to make filmed versions of letters. Writers featured in this piece include Eve Leigh, Nemo Martin, Satinder Chohan and Hannah Khalil.

‘Out on the Toon’ will create cultural experiences for audiences on the streets of the city and will include Street Art Opera by John McIlduff, Milk Presents’ High Vis, described as part-performance and part-installation and Walks and Talks, a series of walking performances created by the theatre’s young company.

The final part of the season will be ‘Homecoming’, welcoming audiences back into the theatre once restrictions ease, with a new adaptation of HG Well’s The Invisible Man

Natalie Ibu said that the pandemic has “provided a brilliant opportunity to hit the ground running” and “meet audiences wherever they are and then lead them back to our building when it’s safe to do so.”
