Musical films and stars pick up Oscar nominations
This year’s Oscar nominations have been announced today and the world of musical theatre is being well represented across the board, along with some of the best acting talents to have graced our stages.
Steven Spielberg’s new version of West Side Story leads the way with seven nominations, including two of the biggest categories of ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’. It has also received nominations for ‘Best Costume’, ‘Best Sound Design’, ‘Best Cinematography’, ‘Best Production Design’ and Ariana DeBose has been nominated for ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’.
Joining DeBose in the the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category is Cabaret star Jessie Buckley for The Lost Daughter and Dame Judi Dench for Belfast. Belfast also picked up a nomination for Ciaran Hinds in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category, along with ‘Best Original Screenplay’, ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’ for Kenneth Branagh.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s work is once again being recognised with his adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s tick, tick…Boom!, picking up a nomination for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ for Andrew Garfield and ‘Best Editing’.
The nominations don’t stop there for Miranda with Encanto, which he wrote original songs for, picking up a ‘Best Original Song’ nomination for ‘Dos Oruguitas’. ‘Encanto’ is also nominated for Best Original Song.
The screen adaptation of off-Broadway musical Cyrano has picked up a nomination for ‘Best Costume Design’.
The Tragedy of Macbeth has been nominated for ‘Best Cinematography’, ‘Best Production Design’ and ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ for Denzel Washington.
