MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL sweeps the board at 2021 Tony Awards
The 74th annual Tony Awards were held last night, with Moulin Rouge! The Musical sweeping the board with a whopping 10 awards, including Best Musical.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical also picked up awards for Best Direction of a Musical (Alex Timbers), Best Choreography (Sonya Tayeh), Best Orchestrations (Katie Kresek, Charlie Rosen, Matt Stine, and Justin Levine), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Derek McLane), Best Costume Design of a Musical (Catherine Zuber), Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Justin Townsend), Best Sound Design of a Musical (Peter Hylenski), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Aaron Tveit) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (Danny Burstein).
Other awards in the musicals categories went to Jagged Little Pill for Best Book of a Musical (Diablo Cody), Adrienne Warren won Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Tina - The Tina Turner Musical, and Lauren Patten won Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for Jagged Little Pill.
The Best Play award was given to The Inheritance, which also picked up awards for Best Direction of a Play (Stephen Daldry), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play (Andrew Burnap) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play (Lois Smith).
A Christmas Carol also pick up several awards for Best Score (Christopher Nightingale), Best Scenic Design of a Play (Rob Howell), Best Costume Design of a Play (Rob Howell), Best Lighting Design of a Play (Hugh Vanstone) and Best Sound Design of a Play (Simon Baker).
Other awards in the play categories went to A Soldier’s Play for Best Revival of a Play, David Alan Grier won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play (also for A Soldier’s Play) and Mary-Louise Parker won Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for The Sound Inside.
