Marlowe Theatre’s socially distanced season to include Kiss Me, Kate choreographed by Oti Mabuse

The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury has announced its new “socially distanced” season, which promises “drama, comedy, music and dance.”

Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner – known as husband and wife Pete and Sue Outnumbered – take centre stage in a new run of shows at Kent’s biggest drama venue.

Dennis and Skinner take on the roles of David and Jane in the Olivier award-winning Benefactors, which centres on the redevelopment of deprived area in South London.

In Michael Frayn’s comedy, ambitious architect David believes his designs serve the community, but when struggling neighbour Sheila comes to increasingly rely upon his kindness, questions arise about who really benefits from idealistic town planning (showing 16-20 March).

Also on at the Marlowe Theatre from 26-31 January is Mischief Theatre’s The Play That Goes Wrong, the accident-prone comedy in which the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society put on a disastrous 1920s murder mystery.

The Philharmonia Orchestra is also coming to the Marlowe on 21 December for Philharmonia At Christmas, a spectacular festive show, including renditions of Coventry Carol, Ding Dong Merrily On High, and Nutcracker Suite.

Also announced is classic Broadway musical Kiss Me, Kate, with choreography by Strictly Come Dancing’s Oti Mabuse, which runs from 12-17 April.

After the Marlowe Theatre was forced to cancel its original pantomime, it has also announced Nurse Nellie Saves Panto, starring Ben Roddy and showing from 11 December – 3 January.

Some of the UK’s top stand-ups are also heading to the Marlowe this winter, including Sara Pascoe (22 January), Russell Kane (February 6) and Seann Walsh (13 February).

All productions will be performed with social distancing in place in the Marlowe’s Covid-secure theatre.

The theatre's chief executive Deborah Shaw said: “We are delighted to be able to share news of our socially-distanced season. We can’t wait to welcome people through our doors again.”

Tickets go on sale to Marlowe members on 19 November with a general release on 23 November.
