Raising the bar with their dare-devil stunts, jaw-dropping feats and irresistible comedy genius, Mischief’s Magic Goes Wrong is currently touring the UK, direct from the West End. We spoke to Sam Hill (The Mousetrap), who plays Sophisticato in the touring production, about his experience on the show thus far and how it feels to be back on stage.

How does it feel to be back performing after such a long period of shutdown?

It feels absolutely amazing to be back after such a long period of closure for theatres. There is an incredible sense of community between the actors and audience, with both parties being thrilled to be back in the auditorium.

Mischief has created its own inimitable, signature style over the years. How does Magic Goes Wrong fit into this unique genre?

Magic Goes Wrong is a Mischief show on steroids! The risk and danger that magic as an art form has innately means that the farce elements of the play are even more heightened, even more dangerous and even more hilarious. 

There is a whole other challenge in this production with the illusion elements. How was the rehearsal process?

The rehearsal process was brilliant and the most I have learnt about performing since I left drama school. It was like going through an entire other training process. I owe a huge amount to Ben (our magic director) as he spent so much time teaching me about the way a magician interacts with an audience, how to deal with audience members on stage and hold an auditorium's attention. These are skills I use every day in the show, but I know will prove invaluable to me for the rest of my career as well. 

Did you have any experience in magic prior to working on this show?

Other than a magic kit when I was 10, no!

Magic Goes Wrong has enjoyed great success in the West End. How is it being received across the country thus far?

It has been received really well, excellent reviews in local newspapers and audiences are leaving the theatre laughing!

What's your favourite moment in the show?

I perform a dove act which I love. It is a beautifully choreographed routine. It is intricate and when it works, it is a truly wonderful piece of theatre.

How do you look after yourself in such a demanding production?

I eat a huge amount of food to keep going. If I go on stage without eating, I’ll faint, I learnt that the hard way! I also have a water bottle in each wing to ensure I am hydrated. 

How would you encourage audiences to come and see Magic Goes Wrong?

It is the perfect show to see at the moment - pure hilarity, fun and amazement.
