Interview: Paul Morrissey and Chris Wheeler on co-founding THE THEATRE CHANNEL

The Theatre Channel is a new video-on-demand platform that brings the thrill of live theatre directly to your screen. We spoke to co-founders Paul Morrissey and Chris Wheeler about creating this one-stop destination for theatre lovers.

What inspired you to set up The Theatre Channel?

The Theatre Channel was born out of a passion for theatre and a desire to bridge the gap between stage and screen. As a producer and someone deeply invested in supporting theatre-makers, we wanted to create a platform that celebrates all facets of theatre, from seasoned professionals to emerging voices. we noticed that, while there are various ways to access theatre content, there wasn’t a space dedicated to nurturing a global theatre community online. With The Theatre Channel, we aim to bring a rich variety of theatre content to people worldwide, making theatre accessible, engaging, and relevant to a broader audience.

Why do you think increasing accessibility to theatre is so important?

Theatre has a unique power to inspire, challenge, and connect people. However, traditional theatre can sometimes be inaccessible due to location, cost, or physical barriers. Increasing accessibility is about breaking down these limitations so that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can experience the magic of theatre. The Theatre Channel aims to make high-quality theatre content available to a global audience, fostering appreciation and enjoyment across borders and backgrounds. This inclusivity ensures that theatre’s transformative impact can reach more people and nurture the next generation of theatre lovers and creators.

How does The Theatre Channel differ from other streaming services?

The Theatre Channel is more than a streaming platform; it’s a vibrant community for theatre enthusiasts. Unlike other streaming services, we offer a unique mix of free content, premium experiences, live interviews, and exclusive behind-the-scenes access. Our users can engage in The Green Room, a dedicated forum, where they can discuss their favourite performances and connect with like-minded fans. We also go beyond simply showcasing performances, sharing news, reviews, and insights from theatre creators worldwide. With our Theatre Channel+ membership, audiences have access to premium content, ensuring something for everyone, from casual viewers to die-hard fans.

Can you share a favourite moment from your interview series A Spotlight On?

One of our favourite moments from A Spotlight On was interviewing legendary composer Claude Michel-Schönberg. Being present for that intimate insight into his journey with some of the world’s biggest shows was once in a lifetime opportunity. A Spotlight On, now part of The Theatre Channel, has allowed us to go beyond the glitz and glamour, delving into the heart of what makes theatre so impactful. It’s been a joy to bring these candid conversations to our audience, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of those who make theatre possible.

Can you tell us about your From the Fringe content, and why you think it’s important to support emerging or lesser-known theatre?

From the Fringe is one of our initiatives to spotlight emerging talent and underrepresented voices in theatre. We believe that some of the most innovative and compelling work often comes from the fringe —artists who may not yet have a large platform but bring fresh perspectives and stories that challenge, inspire, and resonate. Supporting these voices is essential to keeping the art form dynamic and inclusive. Through From the Fringe and in proud partnership with Chewboy Productions, we’re helping to ensure that diverse talent and stories have a place to shine, reaching audiences who might not otherwise encounter them.

How do you hope to develop The Theatre Channel in the future?

Our vision for The Theatre Channel is ever-evolving. We aim to expand our content offerings, bring more exclusive shows and interviews, and explore partnerships with theatres and creators worldwide. We’re also looking at enhancing our community features, making The Green Room a space where fans and creators can engage meaningfully. As we grow, we hope to create more interactive experiences, maybe even live-streamed theatre performances, to bring that “live theatre” magic to online audiences. We want to keep pushing boundaries to make theatre as accessible, engaging, and inclusive as possible.
