Interview: Elena Breschi on playing Delores in MIDNIGHT COWBOY - A NEW MUSICAL

The world premiere of MIDNIGHT COWBOY – A NEW MUSICAL, based on James Leo Herlihy’s novel which inspired the beloved triple Academy Award-winning film starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman, opens at Southwark Playhouse Elephant next month. We spoke to actress Elena Breschi on playing Delores in the new production.

For people who may not have read the book by James Leo Herlihy, which inspired the 1969 film, what is Midnight Cowboy about?

Midnight Cowboy is about naive Texan born Joe Buck putting his traumatic past behind him and booking a one-way ticket to New York City to embark on his new life as a hustler. There he meets Ratso Rizzo; an ailing conman and the pair develop an unlikely but sweet friendship as they struggle to survive the streets of New York.

What appealed to you about being part of this new musical adaptation of the story?

I watched the film during the audition process and I was drawn to how unique it was for its time. It’s such an iconic story and I always try to work on projects that are out of my comfort zone! I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into, to be honest, but I love that! This show is definitely a highlight of my career so far!

What does presenting Midnight Cowboy on stage as a musical add to the story?

It adds rawness, emotion and soul. As actors with a piece like this, telling this kind of story LIVE to an audience, everything is heightened and you feel more connected with the story and the characters. From the brilliant storytelling, powerhouse vocals and artistic choreography; everything has been created and thought out so well. This musical is truly like no other. Also the music by the iconic Eg White?! Let me just say, y’all ain’t ready!

Who is your character Delores and how much are you finding you can relate to her?

Dolores is a 17-year-old prostitute (not by choice) who is held captive in a brothel. I don’t think I can relate to her a huge amount but as an actor and myself personally, I empathise with every character I come across in order to tell their story truthfully. That being said, I can relate to being a 17-year-old girl and feeling scared in a dangerous situation.

What is it like working in such a small and intimate space like Southwark Playhouse Elephant?

Honestly, I prefer small intimate theatres because it gives a more real and raw experience for the audience and myself as the actor on stage. It’s so much more rewarding!

What is it like to be involved in creating a new production of a new show?

This is actually my first time being part of a brand-new musical. To be part of the creative process of an original show is always a privilege and the CAST! You guys are in for a treat! We are only on week 2 and the talent in the rehearsal room is immense!

Why should people come along and see Midnight Cowboy?

If you liked the film, read the book or have never heard of Midnight Cowboy, this story takes you on a journey you don’t expect; it’s full of surprises and told in such an artistic way. It’s got a lotta heart, darkness and humour! I just can’t wait for people to come and see it!

Midnight Cowboy - A New Musical plays at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant from 4 April - 17 May, with further info here.
