Interview: Actor David Webber on WATCH ON THE RHINE at Donmar Warehouse

The first major revival of Lillian Hellman’s Watch on the Rhine in 40 years opens at the Donmar Warehouse later this week, forming part of the venue’s 30th Anniversary Season. We spoke to actor David Webber, who plays Joseph in the production, to discuss the rehearsal period, working with such an esteemed cast and bringing this political thriller to life.

You’re currently rehearsing for Watch on the Rhine. What attracted you to the part of Joseph?

I was attracted to discovering the inner life of someone who sometimes, by necessity disappears into the scenery in order to survive. What lies beneath? Our fabulous director, Ellen [McDougall]

and I are trying to bring a hidden story into sharp relief to create commentary on the main characters in the play.

How has the rehearsal period been thus far?

It has been a wonderful exploration of a fascinating period of American and European history. Through deep analysis and research, combined with playfulness and enthusiasm, our story has taken shape. It’s truly exciting.

How are you finding the cast, working with Patricia Hodge and Caitlin FitzGerald, among others?

The cast have gelled extremely well and we have become a close-knit and supportive group already. It is a joy to work with fabulous actors I have admired over the years including the remarkable Patricia Hodge and the super talented Caitlin FitzGerald. I am proud to be a part of this highly gifted cast. Written in 1941, it’s renowned as Lillian Hellman’s masterpiece political thriller and that she was ahead of her time.

How do you think the story is relevant in today’s political environment?

A play about an apparently distant war in Europe which was to go on to engulf the world is scarily relevant to what is going on today. Our author challenges the audience to consider whether to stay at home and gossip in comfort or to take a more proactive stance in challenging circumstances.

What can audiences expect from this revival production?

Comedy, excitement and drama combined. A genuine thriller that will keep them on the edge of their seats… a thrilling and challenging evening at one of London’s most exciting theatres.

Watch on the Rhine plays at the Donmar Warehouse from 9 December 2022 - 4 February 2023, with tickets available here.
