This month Steven Berkoff’s play, The Secret Love Life of Ophelia, will be performed for free by the Greenwich Theatre in London. Featuring a diverse cast, the theatre aims to ‘reveal just how universal the experiences of the young lovers are’. In a special guest appearance, Dame Helen Mirren will also appear as Queen Gertrude.

In a reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the piece transforms the character of Ophelia into an active heroine. Allowing her to break free of her passive role in the original text. It was originally performed at the Kings Head Theatre, London, in 2001. This version has adapted the format of letters into video messages and will star 40 young, emerging or marginalised actors; each of whom will perform one of the letters.

The Secret Love Life of Ophelia will premiere on the Greenwich Theatre YouTube channel at 7:30pm on Friday 31 July. It will then be available to view until Friday 14th August. If you wish to support the Greenwich Theatre, you can donate via their website.
