Hairspray UK Tour Postponed
As much as we hate to say it, we have even more bad news to share with you today. In a statement released via Twitter, the UK tour of Hairspray will no longer be taking place this year. The tour was due to open in Leicester this August, before travelling to a number of major cities, but it’s now in the process of being rescheduled for 2021. It’s yet another entry to the list of tours that are currently on hold.
The feel good show, based on the 1988 movie, follows Tracy Turnblad’s life in 1960’s Baltimore. After gaining a spot dancing on ‘The Corny Collins Show’, Tracy decides to fight for racial integration. It debuted on Broadway 18 years ago, and has remained popular ever since. The musical film came out in 2007, it has toured the country 4 times, and is constantly chosen for amateur productions.
A West End revival was due to open at the London Coliseum this April, but now has its opening night planned for September. Michael Ball is due to reprise his role as Edna Turnblad, with West End newcomer Lizzie Bea taking on the role of Tracy. Though with the recent announcement by Cameron Macintosh, who has decided to close many theatres until 2021, this could well change in the coming months. But for now, tickets are still available. With the Box Office accepting exchanges and refunds if proven necessary.
As this news only broke today, exact dates have yet to be announced. The cast and crew are currently unknown as well. Venues should soon be in touch with ticket holders, who will be able to choose between a full credit voucher and a refund. It may also be possible to transfer your booking over to next year.
But one thing is for certain, the coronavirus pandemic ‘Can’t Stop The Beat’ just yet!
