Glastonbury Abbey production of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT cancelled
Glastonbury Abbey’s upcoming production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, scheduled to play on 29 & 30 August, has been cancelled after being criticised for the lack of representation of Middle Eastern and North African performers.
MENA Arts UK have also condemned the lack of diversity in the London Palladium production of the same show. It is thought that the organisation are currently in talks with Michael Harrison, the producer of the West End show.
A statement from the organisers of the Glastonbury production said: “We realise that the circumstances are very difficult this year, as theatre prepares for what we all hope is a return to full houses within the next few months.
“Within these difficult circumstances, and with a very limited rehearsal schedule, we are unable to fully cast the Somerset-based professional show.
“We regret very much that the challenges of casting have led us to take the decision that it is not possible to produce a professional production of Joseph this summer.”
Whilst it is unclear whether the cancellation is solely down to the “challenges of casting” mentioned, it is thought that this is an overwhelming factor.
Hopefully they will be able to proceed with the production at some point in the near future, Besties.
